Learn More

To learn even more about how to “share the sea and shore” with marine life, NOAA Fisheries has you covered. Find out how to avoid harm to each species, what to do with pets, how to operate boats, and all the legal details you need to understand the scope and intent of Marine Mammal Protection laws.

This is not the first campaign, nor the last to promote pono travel on the islands. These others identify more reasons and ways to ensure you’ll live up to being the respectful person you intend to be.

About Us

This campaign was created in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and Pacific Islands Fisheries. It was not only developed using previous science and theories, but it was also shaped by numerous interviews with Hawai‘i community members and tour business operators. Our goal is to help encourage respectful and lawful viewing of protected marine wildlife in Hawai‘i through science-based communication approaches. Once complete, the results of this project will be made available on this website and from NOAA Fisheries.

More and more people are showing they are respectful and care by never getting too close to wildlife, especially these endangered and threatened species.
